Tips on How to Make a Roller Blind

An attractive and economical alternative to curtains, roller blinds are easy to make and fit. You can use them to ensure privacy or as sunshades, or simply as a decorative addition to curtains.

In confined spaces and on small widows, roller blinds make an excellent substitute for curtains. They can also be teamed up effectively with curtains to keep out the sun or to provide privacy in the same was as net curtains.

A roller blind is the simplest and most economical of blinds to make, requiring the minimum of fabric and sewing. Since the blind lies flat against the window you only need the same amount of fabric as the area of the window, plus a very little extra at the top and bottom.

Kits in many sized are readily available from DIY centers, department and hardware stores. They come with simple assembly instructions that should be followed carefully.

Specially treated stiffened and spongeable blind fabric is easy to find, and comes in a variety of widths up to 69 inches (175cm). This means that you can cover practically any window without making unsightly joins. For economy you can cut stiffened fabric sideways as well, since it does not have a grain.

You can stiffen furnished fabric yourself for making a blind in the same fabric as the curtains or to coordinate with other soft furnishings. The stiffening solution also prevents the fabric from fraying.

Suitable stiffening solutions are usually displayed beside blind making kits. Fabric used for making colorfast; thin fabrics crease too easily and thick ones will not roll satisfactorily.

Roller blinds can be as plain or as pretty as you wish; the simplest are made of plain fabric with a lath at the base, while the most lavish make a feature of the window, with patterned fabrics, shaped edging, tasseled trimmings and elaborate corded pulls.

Follow step 5 to calculate the amount of fabric required. To join widths of fabric, allow 5/8 inch (1.5cm) on each width for overlapping joins and position the joins at equal intervals across the blind. Remember to allow extra too for matching the pattern when joining widths, or when you plan to make a number of blinds that will hang next to each other.

Generally a blind is hung inside the window recess so that it can be combined with curtains hung in front. If it is to be used alone, it can be hung outside the recess to make the window look wider.

Roller blind kits come complete with the roller, brackets, spring loaded winding mechanism, wooden slat, cord and acorn toggle.

To make a roller blind you will need:

1. Measuring up for the blind kit. Measure the width of the window recess. To ensure light won't come in round the edges when hanging the blind in front of the recess add 4 inches (10cm) to the measurement for an overlap on either side. Purchase a roller blind kit of the exact measurement or the next size up which can be cut to fit.

2. Fixing brackets. Follow manufacturer's instructions for fitting brackets, checking first that they are level with a spirit level. Use a bradawl, screws and screwdriver for fixing into wood; a drill, wallplugs, screws and a screwdriver for masonry.

Inside the recess, position brackets close to the sides, at least 1 ¼ inches (3cm) from the top of the recess or ceiling to allow for rolled fabric. Outside the recess, position brackets at least 2 inches (5cm) from the recess edges and 2 inches (5cm) above it to prevent light showing round the top and sides.

3. Cutting the roller to size. Measure the distance between the brackets with a steel measuring tape, deduct 1/8 inch (3mm) to allow for the end cap and saw the roller at the bare end to this length. Fit the cap over the sawn end, then push the pin into the hole and gently hammer it home.

4. Preparing the fabric. When stiffening fabric yourself, do so before cutting it, as it may shrink slightly. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the chosen stiffener and allow time for the fabric to dry. The stiffened fabric shouldn't fray so there is no need for hems; if it frays slightly, zigzag the edges with a sewing machine.

A diluted solution of PVA glue can be used to stiffen the fabric. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations and use a large container to prevent creasing the fabric too much. If possible work outside as it can be a messy procedure.

5. Measuring up for cutting. Measure the length of the roller, excluding the pin ends, and deduct 3/8 inch (1cm). For the drops, measure from the center of the brackets to the windowsill, or to just below for a blink hung outside the recess. Add a minimum of 8 inches (20cm) to allow enough fabric to cover the slat and the roller when the blind is pulled down. Allow extra fabric for pattern matching and centering a design.

6. Cutting out. Lay the fabric out on a flat surface, with any large motif centered. Use a set square and tailor's chalk to mark exact 90 degree angles at the corners to ensure the fabric is cut on the straight grain so that the blind rolls evenly and hangs well. Using a sharp rotary cutting knife or craft knife and a steel rule as a guide, cut the fabric to size. If widths of fabric need to be joined, overlap the cut edges by 5/8 inch (1.5cm) and glue with fabric glue.

7. Fitting the wooden slat. Saw the slat 3/8 inch (1.5cm) shorter than the width of the blind. Turn a single 2 inch (5cm) hem to the wrong side along the bottom edge. Check that the slat slides easily into the casing, and alter if necessary. Machine zigzag stitch close to the edge of the casing. Slide the slat into place and stitch both ends closed.

8. Attaching cord holder and cord. Push one end of the cord through the hole in the cord holder, and knot to secure. Thread the other end of the cord through the acorn and tie a knot. Position the holder in the center of the casing for the wooden slat, either at the front or back of the blind as preferred, and screw in through the material.

9. Positioning fabric on roller. Lay the fabric flat, right side up, and place the roller on top, parallel to the upper edge. Wind the edge of the fabric on to the roller, lining it up with one of the horizontal marks. If your roller has no positioning marks, draw a straight line along the length of the roller at right angles to the edge. Fix the fabric in place temporarily with adhesive tape.

10. Fixing fabric to the roller. Some kits come with double-sided tape for attaching the blind to the roller. Otherwise, hammer small tacks (or staple) through the edge of the fabric into the roller, spacing evenly 4/4 inch (2cm) apart. Peel off the sticky tape.

11. Hanging the blind. Roll the fabric tightly round the roller by hand and fit into the brackets. Pull the blind down to its full extent. Give the cord a gentle tug and the blind should roll up smoothly; if it doesn't, the tension is wrong. Re-roll and repeat until the tension is right.

Normally when printed fabrics are rolled up, the plain side of the fabric will be visible on the roller, to prevent this, reverse the position of the brackets so that the fabric drop hides the roller.
