DIY: Paisley Vintage Patio Set
Bring a retro feel to your patio with this paisley painted vintage patio set! Many old metal patio sets (such as those from the 1950s and 1960s) can be found easily and inexpensively at junk stores and flea markets.
For this project, you will need:
- Four vintage metal chairs
- A round metal table
- Wire brush
- Medium grit sandpaper
- Rust proof spray paint primer
- Rust proof spray paint, dark brown in color
- Rust proof spray paint, salmon pink in color
- Rust proof spray paint, cream in color
- A carpenter's pencil
- A large paisley print stencil
- Smaller print stencils
- Masking tape
Start by washing and drying all four chairs plus the table to remove any excess grime. Brush all five pieces with a wire brush to remove any flaking rust or old paint. Sand the table and chairs down until smooth, and all of the old paint has been removed. (Note: If a bit of old paint still remains it is okay, but try to get off as much as possible.)
Spray each of the chairs and the table with rust proof spray paint primer. (This step should not be skipped even if the manufacturer directions do not state to prime, as it helps adhere the paint to the metal.)
Once the primer has dried, apply a coat of dark brown paint to each of the chairs. Allow the paint to dry fully before adding a second coat. Sand the chairs lightly in random areas to add a vintage "aged" look. With a carpenter's pencil and a large paisley print shaped stencil, draw the design on the center front of each of the chair backs. Mask the area well with tape, and spray paint the design with two coats of salmon pink paint.
Apply two coats of dark brown paint to the table, allowing sufficient drying time between coats of paint. Sand the table top lightly to add to the vintage look. Apply the large paisley pring design to the center of the table by tracing the design on in pencil. Mask the table top with tape and paint the star with cream colored paint. Trace smaller paisley prints onto the table top, mask the table top with tape, and paint the smaller design with the salmon pink paint.
Allow the project to sit for twenty four hours before use.
TIP: For added comfort, add pink and brown tie on cushions to each of the chairs before use.
