How to Build a Brick Patio in Your Backyard and Survive the Project
Tips in how to build an outdoor patio.
Once we delimited the perimeter, we dug four holes on the corners for four stakes. We used the leveler and tied a rope around the stakes. That would be how deep we have to dig. And we started to dig. At the beginning, it went well, besides the incredible heat that hit San Antonio the first week of July. The first problem appeared when we hit rock. First, little rocks; soon, huge rocks, and finally, we couldn't dig anymore. So the area won't be as deep as it is supposed to be, oh well, we can live with that. We moved on.
Next step is buy sand, and cover the ground with it. Easy enough. The problem was that the gate in our fence is a single one. No room for trucks. So we rented a U-Haul for the day, we loaded with sand (40 dollars the full load), and we parked it in the driveway. With shovels and lots of patience, we shoveled the sand to a wheelbarrow, and took it to the back yard, where we dumped it on the area. It took us three trips to the sand place and three big and heavy loads of sand, and infinite trips from the front to the back yard, under an implacable sun. That was a Saturday, and Sunday we barely moved from the bed.
Once we had the sand beautifully laid in little hills on the backyard, we went to buy the brick. We opted for red concrete brick, medium size, and we bought in Home Depot at 1.50 dollars the piece. We calculated it, and for a patio 24 x 24 we needed 500 bricks. Our family cars are a sedan and a van, so we tried the van. We could transport only around eighty bricks in each trip. And we had the same problem than with the sand: no vehicle access to the backyard. So we played the wheelbarrow game again, carrying bricks from front to back. It was so hot that our sweat was wetting the bricks, no kidding.
Next, it was time to start leveling the surface. We laid two thin pipe poles parallel on the ground, and we leveled them with the leveler. And we started dumping sand between the poles, raking it with a long piece of wood and checking each inch with the leveler. We kept moving the poles until we finished all the area. Sounds easy, but it isn't. When you think that it is leveled, the leveler's bubble goes crazy, and takes you centuries to level a tiny foot of the area. That slow and maddening process took us a whole weekend: two days and one long night.
Four cases of beer later, we started laying bricks. Once again, using constantly the leveler to make sure the ground is leveled. Another hot and busy weekend.
Last part of the nightmare patio project: Using the leftovers of sand, we dumped it over the laid bricks, to make a kind of grout and make them fit together.
The brick patio looks nice, I admit that. And it coast us around 1000 dollars. But seriously, I learned a lesson: I love to do some nice and easy projects, I love to take care of my plants, my yard. But the hard work, the sweaty stuff that leaves your poor hands full of blisters, I will leave it for the pros. I swear.
