How to Apply False Eyelashes
Add dramatic curtains to your windows by learning how to apply false eyelashes.
Although false eyelashes have the power to draw attention to your eyes, learning how to apply them correctly will take time and patience. Even though I started with an eyelash kit when I initiated myself into the faux eyelash club, I went through at least four or five pairs before I learned how to apply them correctly. My hope for those reading this article is that you walk away with the skills and confidence when it comes to applying false eyelashes.
There are different types of false eyelashes such as individuals, clusters, and half and full sets. For this article I will be focusing on full set eyelashes because once you master those applying the other types will be a breeze.
A full set of eyelashes are either real or fake, come in various lengths with different colors or glitter added to them. They can be full and exaggerated to give you a glamorous look or they can be sparse to give you a more natural look. The sets all come on a thin strip which is where you will apply your adhesive glue and attach it to your lash line.
With most kits comes a strip holder which may resemble a larger version of tweezers which makes it useful for beginners. Depending on your level of experience you may want to start out with tweezers, but if you're comfortable using your hands you are more than welcome to do so.
There's this saying, "Slow and steady wins the race," and that's exactly how it is when it comes to putting on false eyelashes. If you try to put them on in a hurry you will have to remove them and place them on again because of mistakes, and you will be stuck with lashes full of glue and you don't want that.
Before you begin any application, place the false lashes against your lash line to make sure they are the correct length. If they are too long you can always cut it to fit your length, but I've come to notice that most false eyelashes are the correct length. Also, never start off placing your false eyelashes in the inner corner of your eye because it will feel as if something is in your eyes as well as weigh them down.
The first thing to do when it comes to applying false eyelashes is putting the right amount of glue on the strip. Too much glue will spill over onto the lashes causing them to bind together and make a mess on your eyes, and too little will cause them not to stay in place properly. The best way to apply the right amount of glue to the strip is to squeeze the glue just enough to where it come to the surface of the opening, but not spilling over and hold it. While the glue is sitting on the surface of the tip, take the tip and slide it slowly over the strip making sure to stay on the strip. Repeat this process one or two more times to make sure you have enough glue to keep your lashes in place.
Once you have applied your glue, you're going to wave the lash in the air for about twenty to thirty seconds. Just long enough for the glue to become a little tacky. In other words, still enough so that the glue doesn't move but still wet enough for it to adhere to your lash line.
Some may frown on this next part because a lot of people discourage it since it has the ability to create premature facial lines around the eyes; however, this tip is solely for those who wear corrective lenses like me. If you don't wear glasses and find that this tip helps you then by all means use it. I wear glasses so it's difficult for me to see without them including my lash line when I'm applying false eyelashes, so I pull my eye to the side as if I'm about to apply eyeliner and I place the false eyelashes at the edge of the outer corner of my eye and then press the rest of the strip down until it's on my lash line completely.
This type of application is frowned upon because if done wrong it cause the eyelid to ripple, but I never have that issue; like I said, this is an application that works best for me since it's difficult for me to see without my glasses. Doing it this way also allows me to get directly on the lash line preventing any gaps. For everyone else with 20/20 vision, you'll want to take either your tweezers on hand and lay the lashes on your lash line, gently pressing it in place. Keep your eyes closed for about twenty seconds-until the glue dries-and then open them. Even if you mess up with your glue it will dry clear so the mistake won't be as noticeable. However, if you notice a large gap between the lashes and your lash line you will have to remove the lashes and start over.
Two tricks I've learned which serves two different purposes are 1) to make the false eyelashes seem real, take a clean mascara wand or one with mascara on it and apply it to the lashes. By doing this you are blending your false lashes with your real ones so no one will ever tell the difference unless you have on dramatic eyelashes. 2) If you are a beginner and you are having gap issues, apply eyeliner to both the lash line and waterline before applying the lashes, that way if you do have a minor gap it won't be noticeable with the eyeliner.
I know it seems as if there are lots of steps to endure when applying false eyelashes, but I guarantee it will be worth it once you see the shape of your eyes highlighted and the drama they add. It will take a lot of practice and patience, and if you stick with it and go easy on yourself I promise you will be applying false eyelashes like a pro!
