So you want to start a garden? This series will help you better understand the methodology of basic gardening.
Soil Preparation
Prior to planting a garden, thorough soil preparation is essential. Poor soil preparation will usually result in germination failure or a low germination rate. When doing soil preparation, there are a few things to aim for regardless of the size of the garden. Soil particles should range from 0.5 to 5mm, the size of soil crumbs. There should be sufficient moisture right under the soil to ensure that seeds get enough water to germinate and progress to maturity. The bread size soil crumbs should be firm enough that rain droplets do not break them down. Finally, all the above conditions should be consistent on the entire garden surface up to a depth of at least 2 inches.
Soil Type and Soil Conditioning
Planting a garden should be planned when the conditions are just right. Soil preparation should begin well in advance, before sowing. Noteworthy too is the soil type. Each soil type has its own challenges. In sandy soil, organic matter is recommended for use early during the soil preparation to prevent it from becoming too dry. Clay soil on the other hand needs to be broken up by either liming, putting organic matter or growing some types of crops like potatoes that help in improving the soil aeration and porosity. Some of these basics of gardening may seem challenging to a beginner. However, by starting a garden one will gain the needed experience to get it off in the right direction.
Garden Cleaning and Beyond
Cleaning up of the garden involves removing perennial weeds, rocks and other obstructions. After that, one should incorporate organic matter by either adding a thick layer of autumn leaves and lawn cuttings to the soil, rotten animal manure or garden compost. The use of organic matter is essential in any soil preparation. This is because microorganisms in the soil easily break down organic matter. These microorganisms are able to convert the rotten matter into a form that can be used by the plants. Therefore, in any gardening basics, the practices used must be safe and conducive to allow these organisms to function. By using the above guidelines, one can reap the harvest of a well-prepared garden.
