Easy and Economical Fire Pits
Build your own outdoor fire pit cheaply and economically with these fantastic design ideas.
Metal Insert A base of most fire pits are made from cast iron. This base alone is all that is needed for a simple fire pit. Rust or not, a heavy caldron or other cast iron metal inserts can be used in place of expensive store bought fire pits. Garage sales and flea markets are the place to pick up surplus or antique cast iron basins.
Once a metal insert is secured, it can be buried in a series of crushed stone layers and inset in pavers or a wood deck. Medium sized granite stones serve as the base layer. Mix in smaller crushed granite for a sturdy support, even for round shaped bottom caldrons. A small fire can then be lit with charcoal or oak chips, creating a unique look the fire pit below the deck or patio and the fire flush at the surface.
Stacked Field Stone If an elevated look if more your style, a caldron or other metal insert can be hidden by stacking field stone around the metal basin. Using an alternating layering technique, stack stone around in a circle until you reach the top.
Other layering techniques (pickling) involve alternating layers of broken pieces and large flat stones. Herring bone layers a circle of stones leaning at a 45 degree angle in one direction, followed by another layer of field stones traveling in the opposite direction. Many attractive solutions and design elements can be made by stacking field stones. Best of all, it can be done on any existing patio or deck.
Pavers and SandIf you've done or you're planning on doing a patio made from pavers, you might want to add a few extra to the order. Creating a stacked paver fire pit looks very attractive and is simple to create. You don't have to worry about the pavers being fire rated either.
Build a 4x4 paver fire pit by stacking pavers on top of each other. Use paver stakes to hold them in place. After you get the pavers stacked high enough to be flush with your metal fire pit, you can back fill it in with white sand for an attractive and cheap outdoor fire pit.
