Cinder Block Bench
This outdoor bench is one of the cheapest you can build!
Want a nice, roomy bench for your patio, yard, or deck? One that's easy to build but one that won't cost a fortune? Well, you won't even need any building plans when you opt for a cinder block bench. Cinder blocks are not expensive and, with a few of them, you can create a sturdy bench that is more comfortable than you might think. Since you won't need a hammer, nails, or any power tools, nearly anyone can build the easy but useful bench.
It's up to you how long you make the bench but, for a good width, start by aligning the blocks against an outside wall. Put down the first block so that one of the small ends of it is butted against the wall. Lay the next block beside it, so that it's small end is also against the wall. Continue to put more blocks against the wall, and butt them against each other, until you have a row as long as you want for the length of the bench. That will be the back row of the base.
Make a front row by turning the cinder blocks the other way. That is, position the first block in the front row, pushing one long side of the block against the back row. Lay the blocks, end to end, to make the first row as long as the second row. That will complete the base of the bench. Although you can make the bench as long or as short as you wish, a good size is created when you align 10 blocks in the back row of the base, and five across the front.
Make three rows on top of the two base rows. If you've gone with the fifteen blocks on the base, you'll need 15 blocks on top. All three rows - with five blocks in each row - of top blocks should be positioned so that one long side of each block is facing the front of the bench. With those three rows in place, the bench itself is finished. You'll just need some cushions to make it more comfortable.
You can purchase outdoor cushions, made for loungers, and use Velcro or double-sided tape to secure them to the cinder blocks. Or, you can just cut two long, wide pieces of vinyl, sew a band around them, and stuff them with a piece of foam. The deck, yard, or patio bench, made of cinder blocks, is large, cheap, useful, durable, and really quite comfortable.
