How to Build a Mulched Flagstone Patio

Step 1: Levelling the Area
Using spray paint mark out the area you wan your Mulched Flagstone patio, removing any debris and levelling out any high spots with a shovel. Excavating a trench to the height of your stones will give your finished patio a flush to the ground look. You can rent a rototiller or sod cutter to make this job easier, always ensure you wear ear and eye protection.
Step 2: Laying out the flagstone
Think of your natural flagstone patio as a big jigsaw puzzle. Lay your flagstones out in your yard finding the pieces that best fit next to each other and making sure your gaps are of a consistant size. Enlist plenty of help for moving your stone around. Ensure that your flagstone is of patio-grade, using the largest pieces for the heaviest traffic areas and underneath furniture.
Step 3: Cutting the stones
To break off any sharp edges that may injured some when your Mulched Flagstone Patio is finished, firstly use the claw part of your hammer to remove the piece then to smoothen it gently hit it with the front of your hammer. To make larger pieces smaller score a line on the flagstone and then tap your chisel, with a hammer, moving a long the scored line the length of half a chisel each time. Repeat this until the piece breaks. Now smooth it out with your hammer as I have explained for a sharp edge. Once again always consider safety and wear eye protection.
Step4: Setting the stones

The stones must be checked to be sure they are level, you will also need to stand on them to check they will not tip. Any stones that tip will need to be removed more sand added and returned, if need be you can use the small pieces that have broken off your stones to wedge underneath.
Step 6: Filling in the gaps
To fill the gaps in a natural way use some mulch dipped into water then push the wet mulch into the gaps. Also ground cover can be used to add a little color to your Mulched Flagstone Patio.
