Guide to Hanging Oudoor Christmas Lights
Explains how to hang lights on your house, bushes and trees.
First, measure the outside of your house to ensure you have enough lights. There are several options for the types of lights and length of strands you can buy. Shop around and buy what you feel comfortable with. Make sure you buy lights that have bulbs that can easily be replaced. I highly recommend buying LED lights as this will save you energy as well.
Before you hang the lights, test each strand to make sure there are no burned out bulbs. Also know where you are plugging them in at so you know where to start.
Make sure you have the right light clips as well. If you plan on hanging your lights from your gutters, make sure you have clips meant to use for gutters.
Now that you have tested your lights, and have your clips, you are ready to head outside. Make sure you have a sturdy ladder and I recommend a helper if possible.
Start by your power source. Using an extension cord, make sure the cord can reach from the power source to where you start hanging the lights. Now use the clips to hang your lights. It is recommended to hang the clips 12 inches apart.
If you are decorating bushes and trees in your yard, I recommend using white lights on the house and color lights in the yard, or vice versa so that it's not over the top with to many colors in different areas.
If you have bushes you want to decorate, there are several ways to accomplish this. There are light nets that you can buy and simple set over the bushes. Or you can buy outdoor light strands and wrap around the bush.
If you have trees you want to decorate, this can be accomplished much like your indoor Christmas tree. You will use an outdoor light strand and start at the trunk wrapping the strand around. Continue wrapping the strand around as far up as you can go and into the branches. If you live in an area that has tall trees like palm trees just go as high up on the trunk as you can. For the palm trees you can even twist a white light strand and a red light strand around the trunk to make it look like a candy cane stick in the dark.
Decorating outside can be a fun way to show of your house to those who drive by and your neighbors. Just make sure you have proper measurements of your house and know where all your power sources are.
